Design of a QoS-Guaranteed Wireless ATM Network System
This project studies problem on the development of QoS guaranteed Wireless ATM
network systems. This project is an integrated three-year project, composed of
four subprojects. The objectives of the four subprojects are briefly described
as follows. Subproject
1
Professor
Wen-Tsuen Chen leads "QoS Guaranteed Access Schemes to Wireless ATM Network
Systems". The primary goal of this subproject is to provide a hardware independent
wireless media access scheme that can provide hop-by-hop QoS guarantee. Through
the proposed wireless media access scheme, the network can transmit datagrams
with QoS. Besides, this subproject also studies the conversion of protocols between
wireless networks and ATM networks and the negotiation of QoS parameters between
mobile nodes and the ATM networks. Subproject
2 Professor Huei-Jen Liu leads "Mobility Management in Wireless ATM
Network Systems". In this subproject, different schemes for augmenting a
wireless ATM network to support location management of mobile terminals and handover
protocols for rerouting a connection when the mobile node movement in both ATM
protocol and IP protocol suits. In cooperating with other subprojects, the multicasting
capability will also be considered. In order to make handover fast and efficient,
the methods to predict moving directions of a mobile node will also be studied.
In addition, different alert levels may be provided when congestion may occur
in neighboring coverage area which mobile nodes may move towards and directly
connect with next. The integration of Mobile IP and Wireless ATM will also be
addressed. Subproject
3 Professor Pi-Rong Sheu leads "QoS Guaranteed Multicast Connection
Management for Wireless ATM Network Systems". The research goals of this
subproject includes: Wireless ATM mobile host signaling interface, signaling interface
for between ATM switches, resource management module, multicast group management
module, connection management module, RF-level handover, and VC-level handover,
Mobile IP multicast, and implementation of RSVP over Mobile IP. Subproject
4 Professor Rei-Fong Chang leads "QoS Guaranteed Application Environment
for Wireless ATM Network Systems". The research goals of this subproject
include: QoS mapping between applications and transport layer, session management,
dynamic QoS re-negotiation on the fly. After
studying the above research topics, suggestions are expected to be proposed to
the National Telecommunication Development Program in conformance to the development
of the advanced technology of Wireless ATM. We will try to integrate this work
with the National Experimental Network. The extension of providing Wireless Application
Protocol over Wireless ATM Networks will also be considered. We
have used OPNET to simulate RSVP over ATM about QoS parameters mapping. Next,
we will simulate RSVP parameters transferred in WATM environment.
